Gowns (This is a band)

About 1-2 years ago, one of my favorite California noise bands, The Mae Shi, released an album titled “HLLLYH” in which I had noticed that their main vocalist and founding member Ezra Buchla, was not singing. I quickly found out that he left the band. Now side note here, it seems that their drummer also left and most of the band left the Mae Shi after their latest European tour (that leaves two people left in The Mae Shi). That half of the band went on to form Signals which you can listen to on their myspace page here.

Anyways, I just found out (I know I’m 3 or 4 years late) that Ezra and and Corey Fogel (drummer) went on to form a band called Gowns. I’d like to say that Gowns is not your traditional band or your ordinary band, as far as sound goes. Easy way to describe Gowns? Downtempo indie band. So what’s the big deal? Well first of all you have Ezra Buchla singing and if you’ve ever heard early Mae Shi you know that’s always a treat. There’s something haunting about the music that they make, something eerie. What I do note and admire is the minimal aspect of everything, it’s almost as if all of their songs could be pop songs if you added a dance-y drum beat . A lot of emotion is channeled through the instruments and the slow, lumbering almost drone-like textures of the music are a great complement to the vocals. It’s hard to describe by just listening to the myspace and searching videos on youtube. Make your own conclusions.
